Volunteers assist in all aspects of the Museum and are integral in helping this institution fulfill its mission. Annually, approximately 250 volunteers give 45,000 hours; we are extremely grateful for this commitment.

Gallery Educators

These dedicated volunteers serve as tour guides for youth, adult, and family groups six days a week and give tours to more than 50,000 students every year. They enthusiastically share their knowledge of Jewish history and heritage as they engage diverse students in an interactive dialogue, providing a meaningful educational experience outside the classroom.  People of all faiths, backgrounds, and ages are encouraged to apply.

Requirements: Once chosen for the program, candidates attend a 12-week course of study followed by a 8-week in-gallery practice course. Candidates should have an interest in learning how to teach using artifacts and be able to be on their feet for two hours while leading visitors through the galleries.

Time commitment: Gallery Educators give tours during a four-hour-shift once a week and must commit to one Sunday four-hour-shift monthly. Alternate times for weekly shifts are available on an as-needed basis.

Recruitment for the next class of Gallery Educators will begin in the spring of 2017. Applications are due June 2, 2017. Training for the class will begin in September 6, 2017.

Speakers Bureau
The Speakers Bureau, which includes Holocaust survivors, World War II veterans, and children of survivors, sends volunteers to address a variety of groups, ranging from schools and synagogues to nursing homes and community organizations. Speakers meet thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds and introduce them to the importance of history, memory, and hope. This program is one of the most important outreach activities conducted by the Museum and is extremely effective in generating awareness of the Museum and its subject matter. Interests of the Speakers are matched with the interests of the group requesting a Speaker.

Time commitment: Speaking engagements will be arranged according to a volunteer’s schedule.

Keeping History Center Information Desk
Volunteers are responsible for greeting visitors and welcoming them to the award-winning Voices of Liberty exhibition, instructing them on the use of the iTouch and headset, and providing general information. The audio installation allows visitors to listen to immigrants’ stories of moving to a new country and adjusting to life in the United States. The exhibit has a spectacular view of New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island.

Requirements: Strong interpersonal skills, customer service orientation, and ease when dealing with technology.

Time Commitment: Volunteers are asked to commit to a total of three to seven hours per week.

Edmond J. Safra Hall
Volunteers are responsible for welcoming audiences to the Museum's theater, escorting visitors to their seats, providing information about public programs and the Museum, and offering any assistance necessary for a pleasant visitor experience.

Requirements: Strong interpersonal skills, friendly and respectful demeanor, and customer service orientation. Knowledge of the institution’s public programs and familiarity with the Museum is preferred.

Time Commitment: Volunteers are asked to commit to one shift (three to four hours) per week. The Museum's public programs are generally held on Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons. One brief training session is required.

Pickman Museum Shop
Volunteers assist in the day-to-day operations of the shop as well as support visual merchandising, marketing, and special events. Volunteers are needed Sunday through Friday, including Wednesday evenings.

Requirements: Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation. Retail experience a plus.

Time Commitment: One four-hour-shift per week.

As a not-for-profit organization, the Museum of Jewish Heritage can always benefit from volunteers willing to lend a hand to help the office run more smoothly and efficiently. Volunteers are needed in virtually all departments.

Requirements: Varies.

Time commitment: Minimally once a week during office hours.
